Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access, vascular access cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to perform setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
  • Skills in vital signs measurement, weight assessment, vascular access evaluation, dialysis initiation/discontinuation, intradialytic monitoring and intervention, hemostasis, dressings, UF goal calculation, machine programming, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet
  • Capability to conduct machine safety checks, clean blood spills, prepare lab specimens, manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, patient satisfaction initiatives

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate access, administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment per procedures, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge, perform/record pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms enabled, record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet
  • Document treatment information, progress notes; report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, document interventions for unusual status
  • Monitor vascular access (arterial/venous pressures), intervene/report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment
  • Support QEP/CQI activities and process improvements for patient quality goals
