Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
Ability to evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing vascular access evaluations
Capability to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Proficiency in enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits NVL 160) and conducting machine safety checks
Accurate documentation skills for vital signs, treatment parameters, Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes
Ability to report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
Competence in laboratory testing specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, supply/equipment management
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
Support for staff training on direct patient care programs

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Perform pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluations
Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor intradialytic issues, intervene as prescribed
Monitor patient response, obtain vital signs pre-reinfusion, discontinue treatment per procedures
Ensure hemostasis, apply dressings, evaluate patient pre-discharge
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
Record vital signs/treatment parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initials
Document all treatment-related information, complete sheets/progress notes
Report patient condition changes to RN/supervisor
Observe patients, perform/document machine safety checks and interventions
Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene/report as needed
Obtain/p repare lab specimens
Clean blood spills per policy
Prepare/organize supplies/equipment efficiently to avoid wastage
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Maintain safe/clean working environment
Setup/operate hemodialysis machines
