Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
  • Ability to evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing vascular access evaluations
  • Ability to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Proficiency in programming dialysis machines, enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits NVL 160)
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Ability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Competence in laboratory testing, specimen preparation, cleaning blood spills, and supply management
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvement

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Perform pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (e.g., standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
  • Document all treatment-related information and report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, monitor vascular access during treatment, and document interventions
  • Obtain prescribed lab tests, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
