Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, and UF modeling
Ability to monitor patients’ response to dialysis, evaluate intradialytic problems, and perform interventions as prescribed
Proficiency in obtaining and recording pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Competence in machine safety checks, enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Ability to calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming
Skills in laboratory specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, and supply/equipment management to prevent wastage
Observation and reporting skills for patient status changes to RN or supervisor
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
Support for staff training on direct patient care

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders and procedures
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as prescribed or directed
Monitor and record vital signs, treatment parameters, and patient responses with documentation
Calculate and program dialysis machines for UF goal, treatment time, and modeling; ensure safety alarms are enabled
Document all treatment information accurately and timely, including Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks and document interventions for unusual patient status
Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, and evaluate vascular access during treatment
Obtain prescribed lab testing and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills immediately with disinfectant
Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Maintain safe and clean working environment
Support QEP, CQI, and process improvement activities
