Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Ability to monitor patients’ response to dialysis, evaluate intradialytic problems, and perform interventions as prescribed
  • Proficiency in obtaining and recording pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Competence in machine safety checks, enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Ability to calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming
  • Skills in laboratory specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, and supply/equipment management to prevent wastage
  • Observation and reporting skills for patient status changes to RN or supervisor
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Support for staff training on direct patient care

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders and procedures
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as prescribed or directed
  • Monitor and record vital signs, treatment parameters, and patient responses with documentation
  • Calculate and program dialysis machines for UF goal, treatment time, and modeling; ensure safety alarms are enabled
  • Document all treatment information accurately and timely, including Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and document interventions for unusual patient status
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, and evaluate vascular access during treatment
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately with disinfectant
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
  • Support QEP, CQI, and process improvement activities
