Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
  • Ability to obtain and record pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and evaluations
  • Proficient in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Capability to monitor patients, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and report changes to RN or supervisor
  • Knowledge of machine safety checks, hemostasis, dressings, and blood spill cleanup procedures
  • Ability to prepare laboratory specimens, manage supplies/equipment efficiently, and support patient self-care under RN supervision

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF goals)
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and document all actions
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and evaluations accurately and timely
  • Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
  • Perform machine safety checks and document interventions for patient status
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, and document/report findings
  • Obtain and prepare lab specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies to prevent wastage
  • Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
