Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Ability to obtain and record pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and evaluations
  • Capability to monitor patients during treatment, evaluate intradialytic problems, and provide interventions as prescribed
  • Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Ability to perform machine safety checks and report changes or unusual findings
  • Skills in obtaining laboratory specimens, cleaning blood spills, and managing supplies/equipment

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), and reinfusion procedures
  • Obtain and record pre- and post-dialysis vital signs, weights, and evaluations; calculate and enter UF goals, treatment time, and modeling
  • Monitor patient response, intradialytic issues, arterial/venous pressures, and provide interventions as directed; document and report to RN/supervisor
  • Perform hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and conduct machine safety checks
  • Document all treatment parameters, vital signs, interventions, and patient responses accurately and timely
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies to prevent wastage
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision and assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean environment and participate in QEP, CQI, process improvement, and patient satisfaction activities
