Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
In accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and compliance with corporation, state, and federal regulations
Supports Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI activities, including patient satisfaction and process improvement

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients and inquire about wellbeing
Evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate vascular access, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (QB, QD)
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems per physician order
Monitor patients’ response to dialysis therapy
Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion and perform functions for treatment discontinuation
Discontinue dialysis per procedures, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), obtain hemostasis, and apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge
Perform and record pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, weight, and vital signs
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Record vital signs and treatment parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet
Document patient treatment information, including progress notes if applicable
Report significant information or patient condition changes to RN or supervisor
Observe patient and conduct machine safety checks; report changes to RN/supervisor
Document interventions for unusual patient status and patient response
Evaluate vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene as needed, and report findings
Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills immediately with disinfectant
Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
