Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and compliance with corporation, state, and federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing pre/post dialysis evaluations
Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF goals, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ability to enable safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160) and conduct machine safety checks
Proficient in accurate and timely documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Capability to evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and report changes to RN/supervisor
Skills in hemostasis, dressing application, blood spill cleanup, and specimen preparation for lab testing
Ability to assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency pre-treatment
Obtain pre and post treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic issues, and intervene as prescribed
Monitor and record vital signs, treatment parameters, arterial/venous pressures; document all activities with initial identification
Discontinue treatment per procedures, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform/document machine safety checks; report unusual findings
Document interventions for patient status changes and patient responses
Obtain prescribed lab specimens, clean blood spills, and efficiently utilize supplies/equipment
Report significant patient information/changes directly to RN/supervisor
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
Support maintenance of safe, clean working environment and QEP/CQI activities for patient satisfaction and quality goals
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
