Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and compliance with corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF goals, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ability to enable safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160) and conduct machine safety checks
  • Proficient in accurate and timely documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Capability to evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Skills in hemostasis, dressing application, blood spill cleanup, and specimen preparation for lab testing
  • Ability to assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre and post treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic issues, and intervene as prescribed
  • Monitor and record vital signs, treatment parameters, arterial/venous pressures; document all activities with initial identification
  • Discontinue treatment per procedures, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform/document machine safety checks; report unusual findings
  • Document interventions for patient status changes and patient responses
  • Obtain prescribed lab specimens, clean blood spills, and efficiently utilize supplies/equipment
  • Report significant patient information/changes directly to RN/supervisor
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
  • Support maintenance of safe, clean working environment and QEP/CQI activities for patient satisfaction and quality goals
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
