Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (e.g., OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to perform vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
  • Ability to calculate and enter dialysis machine programming (e.g., UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Knowledge of safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Ability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Skills in laboratory specimen preparation and blood spill cleanup
  • Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Ability to monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Participation in training of direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients and inquire about wellbeing
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate, and administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor response, and intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient, achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Record pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, weights, vital signs
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled
  • Document vital signs, treatment parameters, and interventions accurately and timely
  • Report significant patient changes to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and document interventions for unusual status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures) and intervene/report as needed
  • Obtain and prepare lab specimens
  • Clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in staff training
  • Maintain safe/clean environment and support QEP/CQI activities
