Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
Observation and intervention skills for patient response and machine safety checks

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate, administer heparin
Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD), including intradialytic interventions
Monitor patient response, perform reinfusion vital signs, ensure hemostasis, apply dressings, evaluate prior to discharge
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete documentation accurately and timely
Report significant changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks, intervene for unusual patient status, monitor vascular access pressures
Obtain laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, patient satisfaction
Maintain safe and clean working environment, setup/operate hemodialysis machines
