Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
  • Ability to evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing vascular access evaluations
  • Capability to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Proficiency in enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits NVL 160)
  • Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Observation and machine safety checks per facility policy
  • Preparation of laboratory specimens and cleaning blood spills per policy
  • Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitoring patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assistance in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients and inquire about wellbeing
  • Evaluate vascular access pre-treatment, perform cannulation, administer heparin
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, pre/post evaluations on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initials
  • Document patient treatment information and progress notes
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and document interventions for unusual patient status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene as needed, document/report
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately with disinfectant
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on programs
  • Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment, setup/operate hemodialysis machines
