Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
Accurate documentation skills for treatment sheets, progress notes, and patient data
Observation and intervention skills for patient responses, intradialytic problems, and machine safety checks
Ability to collect laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access cannulation/heparin administration
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), and reinfusion procedures
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient responses, and ensure hemostasis/dressings post-treatment
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and evaluations on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
Document all treatment information, interventions, and patient responses; report changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Perform machine safety checks, monitor vascular access pressures, and intervene as needed
Obtain laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, prepare supplies/equipment, and monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
Maintain safe/clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
