Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Accurate documentation skills for treatment sheets, progress notes, and patient data
  • Observation and intervention skills for patient responses, intradialytic problems, and machine safety checks
  • Ability to collect laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access cannulation/heparin administration
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), and reinfusion procedures
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient responses, and ensure hemostasis/dressings post-treatment
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and evaluations on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
  • Document all treatment information, interventions, and patient responses; report changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Perform machine safety checks, monitor vascular access pressures, and intervene as needed
  • Obtain laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, prepare supplies/equipment, and monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
