Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access, vascular access cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines, including programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Skills in evaluating vascular access patency, obtaining vital signs/weight, initiating/discontinuing dialysis treatments, monitoring intradialytic problems, hemostasis, and applying dressings
  • Ability to perform/record pre/post dialysis evaluations, document on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet/progress notes, and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Capability to conduct machine safety checks, handle blood spills, prepare lab specimens, manage supplies/equipment efficiently, and monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, cannulate, administer heparin
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor response, intervene for intradialytic issues per physician/RN direction
  • Obtain vital signs pre-reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient pre-discharge, record pre/post evaluations/weight/vitals
  • Calculate/enter dialysis machine programming (UF goal, time, modeling), ensure safety alarms enabled
  • Document vital signs/treatment parameters accurately/timely on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet/progress notes
  • Report significant patient changes/unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Observe patients, perform/document machine safety checks and interventions
  • Monitor vascular access (arterial/venous pressures), intervene/report as needed
  • Obtain lab specimens, clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment, support QEP/CQI/process improvements
