Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient-specific education on adequacy measures (e.g., Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access)
  • Skills in evaluating vascular access for patency, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluations
  • Capability to initiate, monitor, evaluate, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), Ultrafiltration (UF) goals, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Proficiency in monitoring intradialytic problems, patient responses, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits (NVL) 160), arterial/venous pressures, and hemostasis
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, vital signs, treatment parameters)
  • Ability to perform machine safety checks, clean blood spills, prepare lab specimens, and manage supplies/equipment
  • Observation and intervention skills for patient status changes, with reporting to RN/supervisor
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
  • Assistance in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
  • Obtain and record pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, and intervene for intradialytic issues
  • Discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (e.g., blood pressure), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform/document machine safety checks
  • Document all treatment info accurately and timely, report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment, intervene as needed, and document/report findings
  • Obtain lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean environment and support QEP/CQI activities
