Responsibilities

Assist in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures (e.g., OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients and inquire about their wellbeing
Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD)
Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide interventions as prescribed
Monitor patients’ response to dialysis therapy
Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion and perform functions for treatment discontinuation
Discontinue dialysis per procedures, evaluate patient (e.g., standing/sitting BP), obtain hemostasis, and apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge
Perform and record pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, weight, and vital signs
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (e.g., UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Record vital signs and treatment parameters accurately on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet
Document patient treatment information, including progress notes if applicable
Report significant information or changes in patient condition to RN or supervisor
Observe patient and conduct machine safety checks; report changes to RN or supervisor
Perform and document interventions for unusual patient status
Evaluate vascular access during treatment (e.g., arterial/venous pressures) and intervene/report as needed
Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills immediately with appropriate disinfectant
Prepare, organize, and efficiently manage treatment-related tasks
Setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Assist in maintaining a safe and clean working environment
Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI activities, including process improvements for patient satisfaction and quality goals
