Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM), disease process/access, vascular access cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines, including programming for UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Skills in patient monitoring, vital signs measurement, intradialytic intervention, hemostasis, and dressings
Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
Ability to assist in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access patency, cannulate access, administer heparin
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD), including reinfusion and termination procedures
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, perform machine safety checks
Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, pre/post evaluations accurately and timely
Document patient treatment information, interventions, and report significant changes/unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), provide interventions
Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Maintain safe and clean working environment
Assist in training direct patient care staff
