Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, including programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Observation and intervention skills for patient response, intradialytic problems, and machine safety checks
  • Ability to collect and prepare laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate, and administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD), including UF programming and safety alarms
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and document all parameters
  • Perform hemostasis, apply dressings, evaluate patient prior to discharge, and record pre/post evaluations
  • Document vital signs, treatment parameters, and patient information accurately and timely
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, monitor vascular access pressures, and document interventions
  • Obtain laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, prepare/organize supplies to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
