Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (e.g., OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
Ability to obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluations
Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
Proficiency in calculating and entering dialysis machine programming (e.g., UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ability to ensure safety alarms are enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Accurate and timely documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Observation and machine safety checks per facility policy
Ability to perform laboratory testing preparation and specimen collection
Knowledge of cleaning blood spills and maintaining a safe/clean environment
Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
Monitoring self-care patients under RN supervision
Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
Welcome patients and inquire about wellbeing
Evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate, and administer heparin as allowed
Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
Monitor patient response to therapy, obtain vital signs before reinfusion, and discontinue treatment
Perform hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
Record pre/post dialysis evaluations, weight, vital signs
Calculate and enter UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling
Ensure safety alarms are enabled
Document vital signs, treatment parameters, and patient info accurately
Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks and document interventions for unusual patient status
Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures) and intervene/report as needed
Obtain and prepare lab specimens
Clean blood spills immediately
Prepare/organize supplies and equipment efficiently
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Support QEP, CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
