Requirements

  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy procedures, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, Sodium (Na) modeling, UF modeling, and safety alarms like Narrow Venous Limits (NVL)
  • Ability to calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Effective communication skills for developing relationships, reporting findings, and resolving customer service issues

Responsibilities

  • Drives FMS culture through values and customer service standards, providing outstanding service to external and internal customers
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships through timely communication; responds, resolves, and follows up on customer service issues
  • Assists in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcomes patients, inquires about well-being, reports complaints/observations to nurse supervisor
  • Evaluates vascular access for patency pre-treatment, reports unusual findings
  • Obtains pre and post treatment vital signs and weights, reports unusual findings
  • Performs vascular access cannulation, reports difficulties/unusual findings
  • Administers Heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Initiates dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (QB, QD)
  • Evaluates intradialytic problems and intervenes as prescribed or directed
  • Monitors patient response to dialysis, reports unusual findings
  • Obtains vital signs prior to reinfusion, performs discontinuation functions, documents
  • Discontinues dialysis per procedures, evaluates patient (standing/sitting BP) prior to venous access termination
  • Obtains hemostasis, applies dressings, evaluates patient prior to discharge, reports findings
  • Performs and records pre/post dialysis evaluations, weights, vital signs with initial identification
  • Calculates and enters UF goal, treatment time, Na modeling, UF modeling
  • Ensures safety alarms (e.g., NVL 160) are enabled
  • Records accurate/timely vital signs and parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
  • Documents patient treatment information, completes Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes if applicable
  • Reports significant information/changes in patient condition to nurse supervisor
  • Observes patient and conducts machine safety checks
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and clean working environment
  • Sets up and operates hemodialysis machines
