Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, including programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Ability to monitor patients, evaluate responses, perform vital signs, weights, and pre/post dialysis evaluations
Accurate and timely documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
Ability to conduct machine safety checks and report changes/unusual findings
Capability to obtain laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre and post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD)
Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide interventions as prescribed, and monitor patient response
Perform reinfusion functions, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and ensure safety alarms are enabled
Document all treatment-related information accurately and report significant changes to RN/supervisor
Observe patients, perform machine safety checks, intervene for unusual status, and document responses
Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures) and report unusual findings
Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies to prevent wastage
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
