Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with FMCNA policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in dialysis machine setup, operation, programming (UF goal, treatment time, Na modeling, UF modeling), and safety alarm enabling (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Ability to conduct machine safety checks, pressure hold testing, and environmental maintenance/cleaning
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Observation and reporting skills for patient conditions and machine issues

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about well-being, evaluate vascular access patency
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight; perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, UF, etc.)
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide interventions, monitor patient response
  • Perform pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, evaluate prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and document all relevant information
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to PCT III or nurse supervisor
  • Observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, document interventions
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene as needed
  • Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens
  • Maintain clean, safe environment; clean/disinfect machines, chairs, equipment between treatments
  • Perform pretreatment machine alarm testing (e.g., Pressure Hold)
  • Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements
