Requirements

  • No dialysis specific experience required (comprehensive on-the-job training provided)
  • Ability to function under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities, including patient satisfaction and process improvement

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (e.g., Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM)) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD))
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and monitor patient response to therapy
  • Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, discontinue treatment per procedures, evaluate patient (e.g., standing/sitting blood pressure), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge and record pre/post dialysis evaluations, weight, and vital signs
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (e.g., Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits (NVL) 160)
  • Record accurate vital signs, treatment parameters, and documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes with initial identification
  • Report significant information or changes in patient condition to registered nurse or supervisor
  • Observe patient, conduct machine safety checks, document interventions for unusual status, and report changes/unusual findings
  • Evaluate vascular access during treatment (e.g., arterial/venous pressures), intervene as needed, and document/report findings
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately with appropriate disinfectant
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and clean working environment
  • Monitor patients performing (tasks)
