Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation for patency and cannulation, heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, including programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
Accurate and timely documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Observation and machine safety checks per facility policy
Preparation of laboratory specimens and cleaning of blood spills with disinfectant
Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvement

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD), including intradialytic interventions
Obtain and record pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, hemostasis, dressings; evaluate patients prior to discharge
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and document all interventions/responses
Report significant changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions for vascular access issues
Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens
Ensure clean working environment, including immediate cleanup of blood spills
Maintain safe environment through machine checks and patient monitoring
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
