Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation for patency and cannulation, heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, including programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Accurate and timely documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Observation and machine safety checks per facility policy
  • Preparation of laboratory specimens and cleaning of blood spills with disinfectant
  • Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvement

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD), including intradialytic interventions
  • Obtain and record pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, hemostasis, dressings; evaluate patients prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and document all interventions/responses
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions for vascular access issues
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens
  • Ensure clean working environment, including immediate cleanup of blood spills
  • Maintain safe environment through machine checks and patient monitoring
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
