Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM), disease process/access, vascular access evaluation, cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines, including programming for UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluation, initiating/discontinuing dialysis, monitoring intradialytic problems, hemostasis, and applying dressings
  • Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Ability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, perform interventions, clean blood spills, prepare lab specimens, and manage supplies/equipment
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Training in assisting with patient/staff education and self-care monitoring under RN supervision

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate access, administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic issues, intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment per procedures, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge, perform/record pre/post evaluations
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling), ensure safety alarms enabled
  • Record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately and timely on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet
  • Document all treatment info, complete sheets/progress notes, report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, observe patients, document interventions for unusual status
  • Monitor vascular access (arterial/venous pressures), intervene/report unusual findings
  • Obtain lab specimens, clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies/equipment efficiently, prevent wastage
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment, support QEP/CQI activities
