Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and compliance with corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing pre- and post-dialysis evaluations
  • Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD, UF goals, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ability to enable safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits NVL 160) and conduct machine safety checks
  • Proficiency in accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Capability to evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and report changes to RN or supervisor
  • Knowledge of patient education topics (e.g., OLC, AMP, UKM, disease process/access)
  • Ability to assist in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Discontinue treatment, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
  • Report significant information or patient condition changes to RN or supervisor
  • Observe patients, perform machine safety checks, and document interventions for unusual status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment, provide interventions, and report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, and clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on appropriate programs
  • Support QEP, CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements for quality goals
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
