Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and compliance with corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to perform vascular access cannulation and administration of heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and disease process/access
  • Ability to work rotating days/shifts at clinic hours: Mon/Wed/Fri 4:30am-8:30pm; Tue/Thur/Sat 4:30am-5pm; Sunday closed
  • Full-time availability

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate vascular access, and administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD), calculate and enter UF goal, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Monitor patients’ response to dialysis, evaluate intradialytic problems, provide interventions as prescribed, and ensure safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160) are enabled
  • Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, discontinue treatment per procedures, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge and record pre/post dialysis evaluations, weight, vital signs with initial identification
  • Document accurate and timely information on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and report significant changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Observe patient and conduct machine safety checks, document interventions for unusual status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), provide interventions, and report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Assist in maintaining safe and clean working environment
  • Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
