Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Ability to perform vital signs, weight measurements, and vascular access evaluations
  • Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
  • Ability to calculate and enter dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Knowledge of safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Accurate and timely documentation skills (Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Observation and machine safety check abilities
  • Ability to obtain and prepare laboratory specimens
  • Training provided (including paid dialysis training)

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients and inquire about wellbeing
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate, and administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD)
  • Monitor and intervene in intradialytic problems per physician orders
  • Monitor patient response to therapy; obtain vital signs before reinfusion
  • Discontinue treatment per procedures, evaluate patient (BP standing/sitting), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled
  • Record vital signs and parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initials
  • Document treatment information accurately and complete sheets/progress notes
  • Report significant changes or info to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and report issues
  • Document interventions for unusual patient status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (pressures), intervene, document, report
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing and prepare specimens
  • Ensure immediate cleanup of blood spills
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
  • Support QEP, CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
