Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
Ability to evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing vascular access evaluations
Ability to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD, UF goals, treatment time, UF modeling)
Proficiency in operating hemodialysis machines, including enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits NVL 160)
Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
Observation and machine safety check capabilities
Ability to perform laboratory testing preparation, specimen collection, blood spill cleanup, and supply/equipment management
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, cannulate, administer heparin
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed
Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (e.g., standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge, record pre/post evaluations, weights, vital signs
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled, record vital signs and parameters accurately
Document treatment information completely, report significant changes to RN/supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks, observe patients, document interventions for unusual status
Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene/report as needed
Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens
Clean blood spills per policy, manage supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on programs
Maintain safe/clean working environment, support QEP/CQI activities
