Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
  • Ability to evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing vascular access evaluations
  • Ability to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD, UF goals, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Proficiency in operating hemodialysis machines, including enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits NVL 160)
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Observation and machine safety check capabilities
  • Ability to perform laboratory testing preparation, specimen collection, blood spill cleanup, and supply/equipment management
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, cannulate, administer heparin
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (e.g., standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge, record pre/post evaluations, weights, vital signs
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled, record vital signs and parameters accurately
  • Document treatment information completely, report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, observe patients, document interventions for unusual status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene/report as needed
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills per policy, manage supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on programs
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment, support QEP/CQI activities
