Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, patency checks, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures, including initiating treatment, monitoring intradialytic problems, vital signs, weights, UF goals, treatment time, UF modeling, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and discontinuation
  • Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and accurate recording of vital signs, treatment parameters, and patient responses
  • Ability to perform patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Capability to conduct machine safety checks, observe patients, intervene for unusual status, clean blood spills, handle lab specimens, and manage supplies/equipment
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment, obtain pre/post vital signs and weights
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), reinfusion, hemostasis, and dressings
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming for UF goal, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Monitor patient response to therapy, evaluate intradialytic issues, provide interventions as prescribed, and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Perform and document pre/post dialysis evaluations, vascular access monitoring (arterial/venous pressures), and any interventions
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled, conduct machine safety checks, and report unusual findings
  • Record accurate/timely information on treatment sheets with initial identification
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies and equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision, assist in staff training, maintain safe/clean environment, support QEP/CQI
