Position Overview

NPR is a mission-driven multimedia organization producing award-winning news, information, and music programming in partnership with hundreds of independent public radio stations nationwide. Our audience values information, creativity, curiosity, and social responsibility, and so do our employees. We are innovators and leaders across various fields including journalism, digital media, IT, and development, impacting millions worldwide daily.

NPR is committed to fostering a workplace where collaboration is essential, diverse voices are heard, and inclusion is key to our success. Integrity, adherence to ethical standards, and compliance with legal obligations are fundamental responsibilities for every employee.

Introduction to Position

This role involves active collaboration with product, sales, programmatic, and digital operations teams to create and maintain audience data segments for sponsorship and across the entire NPR organization.

Candidates should possess a strong interest in digital media and digital sponsorship, and be comfortable communicating with NPR’s sponsors, many of whom are Fortune 500 companies. An ideal candidate will also have a strong interest in ad tech, data analysis, and podcasting, along with enthusiasm for public media, its mission, and its programs.

This position is remote-permitted, but candidates must reside within the 10 states where National Public Media Operates: NY, NJ, CA, CT, MD, VA, IL, CO, MN, and Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities

This position will manage National Public Media’s sponsorship data operations, primarily focusing on the following tasks:

DMP & Data Vendor Management

  • Build and maintain first-party data segments within our DMP, Permutive, with a focus on driving performance for NPR’s sponsors.
  • Oversee the onboarding of data partners and activation of their segments across our inventory.
  • Serve as an internal Subject Matter Expert (SME) on data technology partners, capabilities, matching methodologies, etc.

Internal Adoption & Enablement

  • Oversee the go-to-market strategy for audience data capabilities, working with marketing and sales teams to create and maintain sales collateral around data strategy.
  • Provide training sessions, documentation, and materials to support cross-departmental product adoption and sales enablement.

Data Expertise & Client Activation

  • Serve as the primary contact on sponsorship-related data targeting, integrity, and methodology questions. This includes engaging directly with clients on data-related capabilities, filling out sponsor data RFIs, completing questionnaires about NPR’s data vendor stack, and effectively articulating how data can be leveraged to achieve client goals.
  • Provide client recommendations on contextual targeting, brand safety, and brand suitability capabilities and best practices across podcasting and display inventory.
  • Work with sales and media planning teams to package audience segments for digital proposals to meet client targeting KPIs, drive higher CPMs, and grow overall spend levels from digital sponsorship campaigns.

Data Strategy & Maintenance

  • Collaborate closely with the product team to develop and oversee a strategic roadmap for data products and technology, identifying opportunities for new capabilities/products, resolving data maintenance issues, and tracking the results of changes.
  • Create and maintain benchmarks and performance data for audience and contextual segments.
  • Work with NPR’s product team on data connectivity/enablement, user authentication, and content segmentation, driving work to activate key IDs/signals and enable them across the organization.
