Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure
  • Considerable knowledge of direct patient care modalities including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapies (CRRT), apheresis, and ultrafiltration
  • Familiarity with FMCNA compliance programs and contracted hospitals’ policies and procedures
  • Ability to work under limited supervision

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care in multiple modalities including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ultrafiltration, continuous renal replacement therapy, and apheresis under limited supervision
  • Supervise and direct Patient Care Technicians and clerical staff; provide direction and education to ICU staff for CRRT
  • Deliver direct patient care to assigned patients in the Inpatient Renal Replacement and Apheresis Services setting using appropriate prescribed treatment techniques across all modalities
  • Assess patients’ responses to treatment therapy, make appropriate adjustments and modifications to the treatment plan as indicated by the physician, and communicate problems or concerns to the Inpatient Program Manager, physician, hospital primary nurse, and others as needed
  • Deliver safe, effective care in a timely and efficient manner
  • Give organized, concise shift reports for assigned patients and apply high-level thinking skills to adjust patient schedules based on labs, MD orders, or patient assessments to prioritize critical patients
  • Implement, administer, monitor, and document patient’s response to prescribed intradialytic transfusions, including notification of adverse reactions to physician and blood supplier
  • Collaborate and communicate with physicians and other healthcare team members to interpret, adjust, and coordinate the daily patient care plan for continuity of care
  • Initiate and communicate with FMS facility nursing staff and appropriate hospital personnel as needed
  • Accurately document all treatment information in the individual patient record (ACES) and hospital record as needed
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surface, chair, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments per inpatient renal services policies and procedures
  • Conduct all tasks necessary for preparation for dialysis treatment and document appropriately
  • Perform all required pre-treatment dialysis machine alarm testing
  • Initiate Solution Delivery System if applicable
  • Operate all related equipment appropriately and safely, provide minor troubleshooting when necessary, and efficiently utilize supplies to prevent waste
  • Understand, conduct, and document Dialysis/Apheresis machine safety tests, alarm tests, equipment calibration, dialysate testing, functional testing, and internal/external disinfection on water and dialysis machines per FMS policies
  • Complete and document ongoing participation in QAI activities
  • Participate in staff meetings as scheduled
  • Participate in staff training and orientation as assigned
  • Act as a subject matter expert to hospital staff for dialysis-related patient and equipment complications
  • Report all new or unusual incidents, information, complaints, or problems to the inpatient manager and other parties per Adverse Event Report requirements
