Requirements

  • Functions under direct visual supervision of a Registered Nurse (FMCNA RN) or in a treatment room immediately adjacent to an RN
  • Documented competency and proficiency to set up and prime equipment for renal replacement therapies (hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement, and peritoneal dialysis)
  • Ability to perform physical demands of the job, including those in a hemodialysis environment (reasonable accommodations may be made)

Responsibilities

  • Report and document all new and unusual incidents, information, complaints, or problems to the RN
  • Promote and assist in maintaining a safe and clean working environment
  • Support FMCNA's Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAI) activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvement to achieve QEP goals
  • Promote and assist in meeting Total Area Productivity (TAP) goals
  • Welcome assigned patients, inquire about their well-being since last treatment, and report complaints or observations to the RN
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency and report unusual findings to the RN
  • Obtain necessary pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight; report unusual findings to the RN
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and report difficulties or unusual findings to the RN
  • Calculate and enter individual patients’ dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, Sodium (Na) modeling, and UF modeling as prescribed
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled, including narrow venous limits (NVL 160)
  • Record accurate and timely information regarding vital signs and treatment parameters on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
  • Initiate renal replacement treatment according to prescribed orders, including setting blood flow rate (QB) and dialysate flow rate (QD) or peritoneal dialysis as prescribed
  • Collect, label specimens, and ensure timely delivery to laboratory per facility policy
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide intervention as prescribed or directed by RN, monitor patient response to dialysis, and report unusual findings to the RN
  • Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, perform functions for treatment discontinuation, and document
  • Report any change or unusual findings to the RN
  • Perform and document interventions for unusual patient status and patient response
  • Evaluate patients’ vascular access during treatment (arterial and venous monitoring pressures), provide intervention as needed, document, and report unusual findings to the RN
  • Discontinue dialysis treatment according to established procedures
  • Evaluate patient prior to termination of venous access (standing and sitting blood pressures), obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, evaluate prior to discharge, and report unusual findings to the RN
  • Perform and record pre- and post-dialysis evaluation, weight, and vital signs with initial identification
  • Other duties as required
