Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Ability to perform vital signs monitoring, pre/post treatment evaluations, and hemostasis
  • Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Capability to conduct machine safety checks and intervene in intradialytic problems per physician orders
  • Skills in laboratory specimen preparation and blood spill cleanup
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Training in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency
  • Perform pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Cannulate vascular access and administer heparin as delegated
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and ensure safety alarms are enabled
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, pre/post evaluations on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
  • Document interventions, patient responses, and report significant changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Perform machine safety checks, vascular access monitoring (arterial/venous pressures), and obtain laboratory specimens
  • Ensure hemostasis, apply dressings, evaluate patient prior to discharge, and clean blood spills
  • Prepare/organize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
