Requirements

  • Experience publishing explanatory journalism across a range of subjects
  • Demonstrated experience in using data, technology and visuals for clear, effective explanation
  • Experience working in a news organization
  • Proven track record of collaboration — someone excited about working with other people
  • Ability to be well organized and highly skilled in reporting and writing in a variety of story forms
  • Experience approaching the news creatively
  • An interest in and ability to learn technological skills
  • Experience working with and analyzing data, in Excel, R, Python or other tools preferred
  • Experience producing publication-grade charts and visuals, in Adobe Illustrator, Figma or in the browser preferred
  • Experience producing interactive journalism using modern programming frameworks like Svelte preferred

  • Collaborating with other members of the Visuals desk and colleagues from around The Athletic
  • Producing work in a range of forms, from written stories to charts to other visual forms
  • Data analysis in a variety of forms
  • A range of interactive development, from light chart production to developing interactive applications
  • Adhering to The Athletic’s editorial standards
