Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • Basic understanding of fire prevention principles and safety codes (e.g., NFPA, IBC, IFC, FM Global)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), AutoCAD or MicroStation
  • Willingness to learn and take initiative
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in fire safety or emergency services (volunteer or paid)
  • Familiarity with NFPA standards and OSHA regulations
  • CPR/First Aid certification

Responsibilities

  • Update, maintain, and index fire protection engineering records, drawings, and files
  • Perform hydraulic calculations, code compliance reviews, and detailed engineering studies using applicable fire protection standards
  • Participate in fire risk assessments and hazard identification
  • Develop, test, modify, and document fire protection design standards and spreadsheets
  • Prepare cost estimates for fire protection system design, installation, and maintenance projects
  • Visit project sites, facilities, and supplier locations for inspections, acceptance testing, and system evaluations/troubleshooting
  • Research and compile data on fire codes, standards, and best practices
  • Assist in training sessions
  • Collaborate with emergency response teams and other departments including AEP’s Risk and Insurance Group
