Director of Product Management - Marketplace

Position Overview

Propel is seeking a visionary, data-driven Director of Product Management - Marketplace with proven expertise in scaling a digital marketplace. This role is crucial for driving engagement, revenue, and long-term growth for the Propel Marketplace, which connects ~10 million users to products and services from leading brands. This is a hybrid individual contributor and managerial role.

About Us

Propel is on a mission to empower low-income Americans by simplifying access to government benefits with modern technology. We are a passionate team of 100 "Propellers" dedicated to helping our users navigate their financial needs.

The Role

The Propel Marketplace is a powerful, industry-leading performance tool for our partners and a critical revenue driver for Propel. Our current model involves advertising partners paying on a cost-per-click (CPC) or cost-per-action (CPA) basis for lead generation. Our major retailer partners include Amazon, Verizon, United Healthcare, and Kroger.

As a strategic thinker and empathetic leader, you will:

  • Work closely with the GM of Marketplace and Director of Marketplace Growth and Merchandising to shape strategy, make significant bets, and prioritize feature development.
  • Build and mentor a high-performing team of Product Managers.
  • Set a clear vision and align cross-functional partners across engineering, design, marketing, and operations.
  • Blend user empathy and commercial savvy to design features that meet revenue targets.
  • Craft compelling narratives for executives and partners.
  • Translate data into actionable insights.

Core Competencies

  • Strategic Vision & Execution: Craft data-backed roadmaps, balancing quick engagement wins with bold, long-term bets. Define hypotheses, run A/B tests, and iterate rapidly.
  • Leadership & Team Building: Build and mentor a high-performing team of PMs, fostering ownership, psychological safety, and customer focus.
  • User & Client Empathy: Deeply understand user needs and motivations, translating insights into product priorities. Align client objectives with Propel’s business goals and revenue drivers.
  • Cross-Functional & Technical Collaboration: Align Engineering, Design, Marketing, and Operations on clear goals and metrics. Possess technical fluency in personalization, search, and checkout for scalable experiences.
  • Partnership & Influence: Develop merchant and white-label partnerships, driving win-win integrations. Craft clear, compelling narratives for stakeholders to inspire alignment and action.
  • Execution Rigor & Experimentation: Break down complex initiatives into actionable milestones with high standards. Embed a continuous learning mindset and pivot based on results.

What You’ll Do

  • Set an ambitious product vision for the Marketplace, defining long-term strategy and value propositions for users and partners.
  • Own the entire customer journey for the Marketplace, from discovery and search to offer details, checkout flows, and post-purchase engagement.
  • Define and drive the roadmap for the core platform and across all verticals (grocery, telecom, insurance, financial services, jobs), from ideation through launch, iteration, and go-to-market.
  • Lead and mentor a team of Product Managers (approximately 70% of your time), fostering a culture of experimentation, customer empathy, and end-to-end ownership.
  • Set success metrics (e.g., engagement, conversion, GMV, LTV) and partner with the Data team to run A/B tests, measure impact, and iterate rapidly.
  • Collaborate with engineering and design to ensure the development of high-quality, scalable, and user-centric features.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in product management, with a strong focus on digital marketplaces.
  • Demonstrated success in scaling products and driving revenue growth.
  • Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making skills.
  • Experience building and managing high-performing product teams.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Deep understanding of user-centered design principles.
  • Technical fluency in relevant areas such as personalization, search, and e-commerce.
