Requirements

  • Experience in civil legal services, particularly housing, homeowner protection, foreclosure prevention, or related practice areas
  • Supervisory or management experience in a legal services or similar environment
  • Knowledge of litigation, nonlitigation advocacy, community education, and transactional matters related to homeownership preservation
  • Familiarity with Bronx-specific issues, abusive lending practices, predatory threats, and systemic inequalities

Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise all aspects of the Neighborhood Stabilization and Foreclosure Prevention Project team, consisting of 4 staff attorneys and a paralegal
  • Carry a small caseload
  • Supervise the weekly walk-in foreclosure clinic in Bronx Supreme Court, providing advice and brief services
  • Oversee representation of clients in homeownership preservation, including intake, case assessment, staffing court-based clinics, brief advice, pro se answers to foreclosure complaints, mandatory foreclosure settlement conferences, loss mitigation assistance, full litigation (drafting pleadings/motions, discovery, trials, appeals), and affirmative litigation against abusive mortgage servicing and discriminatory lending
  • Pursue creative strategies and zealous advocacy through litigation, nonlitigation, and community education to challenge predatory practices and preserve homeownership
  • Work with boards of Housing Development Fund Corporation buildings, nonprofits, and government agencies on transactional matters to preserve low-income cooperatives
  • Assist nonprofits with corporate formation
