Candidates should have over 5 years of experience in data stewardship, data governance, or data operations roles, preferably within a technology-focused company. Proven ability to source, assess, and steward data from complex application environments is essential, along with a deep understanding of data privacy laws like GDPR and CCPA, data contracts, and data usage governance. Strong knowledge of metadata management, data cataloguing tools, and data quality practices is required, as is working knowledge of data platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, or Azure. Excellent relationship and stakeholder management skills, particularly with product managers, legal teams, and engineering, are also necessary, along with the ability to work autonomously, manage priorities, and deliver.
The Data Steward will partner with internal application product teams to identify, assess, and source high-value data, facilitating its safe and responsible ingestion into The Data Factory while ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, and ethical standards, including data sovereignty, contractual obligations, and customer terms. They will ensure all sourced data meets governance criteria for accuracy, completeness, lineage, and permissible use, maintain evidence of compliance for audit and legal purposes, and work with legal and data privacy teams to validate consent frameworks and data usage rights. Responsibilities also include curating and managing the organization’s data catalogue, classifying and tagging data using standard taxonomies and business definitions, and promoting data discoverability and reuse. The role involves responding to external data consumer sample validation requests, troubleshooting data quality issues, and coordinating resolutions with producers and engineering teams. Additionally, the Data Steward will champion responsible data use, cultivate relationships across technology, legal, product, and data science teams, and contribute to best practices and playbooks for data onboarding and stewardship.
