About Oura

Oura's mission is to empower every person to own their inner potential. With our award-winning Oura Ring and app, we help over 2.5 million people turn insights about sleep, activity, and readiness into healthier, more balanced lives. We believe that starts from within — by creating a culture where our team feels supported, included, and inspired to do their best work. Our values guide how we show up for each other and our community every day.

The Research Operations team helps turn ambition into reality by designing and executing human research studies that fuel our R&D.

Role Overview

We are looking for a data engineer who wants to solve messy, real-world problems alongside research project managers and scientists. This is a 6-month, hands-on role for someone who thrives at the intersection of research, data, and operations—and wants to leave things working better than where they found them.

This role is ideal for someone who loves sprinting on complex problems, is comfortable working across silos, and wants to make an outsized impact in just six months.

This is a six-month remote US role with a preference for candidates based on the East Coast. We have offices in San Francisco and San Diego for those who prefer hybrid or office settings. Oura employees in other major cities (like Boston and New York) occasionally gather informally at local co-working locations.

What You’ll Do

  • Build dashboards and visualization tools to give our operations team, scientists, and engineers visibility into our studies
  • Improve and monitor data quality—building tests, tracking pipeline performance, and tracking down the root cause of issues as they arise
  • Design, deploy, and maintain pipelines to ingest new data sources, such as from surveys and sensors in our human research studies, in collaboration with DevOps teams
  • Support our data migration to a new platform: contributing to software pilots, and modernizing ingestion and transformation pipelines to meet engineering best practices

What You’ll Walk Away With

  • Experience working at the frontier of R&D that spans health sensing, model development, and human research studies
  • An systems-level understanding of the data lifecycle, from data collection to algorithm development
  • Collaboration with world-class engineers and researchers in a fast-moving, mission-driven environment
  • The satisfaction of leaving behind cleaner systems, better tooling, and clearer visibility into Oura’s research portfolio

Requirements

We would love to have you on our team if you have:

  • 5+ years of industry experience with data engineering tools (e.g. Github, Python, SQL, dbt, CDK, Dagster/Airflow/etc.) and cloud platforms (e.g. Snowflake, Databricks, Azure, AWS)
  • Track record of success data migrations or platform transitions
  • Comfort with building dashboards using tools like Tableau, Quicksight, or Hex
  • Fluency in storage and visualization of multi-modal time series data
  • Deep curiosity to dive into the details of human research studies
  • Is flexible with scheduling: comfortable with occasional global team calls outside normal business hours
