Associate degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering Technology, Instrumentation Controls, or equivalent; OR Certificate in Electronics/Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation (18 months); OR completion of AEP Apprentice progression
Without degree, add 2 years experience in addition to HS diploma or GED
With accredited Associate degree (2 years), no applicable experience required
With Certificate of Completion (18 months), no applicable experience required
Job experience relative to this position: Steel mills, paper mills, nuclear, nuclear navy service, chemical, oil refinery, power plant, or similar industry
Must possess the appropriate State driver's license
Successful completion of the Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) test
Willing to work rotating shifts including weekends, nights, and holidays
Minimum long distance travel required but the inspection of remote equipment is a daily requirement
Responsibilities
Assist in troubleshooting, diagnosis of problems, calibration of plant electrical equipment, and performing inspection and repair of transformers, circuit unbalance, cable faults, auxiliary and protective relays, circuit breakers, switchgear, disconnects, conveyors, motors, and generators
Assist and learn to make calculations of power and power factor for three-phase circuits; analyze circuits by use of prints or special instruments such as voltage or circuit testers
Assist and learn to install control panels, pull cable, and terminate cable connections
Assist with locating, inspecting, troubleshooting and repairing defects in control systems involving electrical, solid state electronic, mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic components using elementary or wiring diagrams, schematic diagrams or control diagrams, along with knowledge of process control
Assist with the dismantling, overhauling, reassembly, inspection, testing, and installation of electrical equipment, lighting, and freeze protection systems
Assist in making layouts for installation of equipment, new construction and remodeling of buildings; check projects for compliance with standards and specifications
Assist in making electrical circuit breaker trip checks and electrical system interlock checks
Assist in the installation and connection of test equipment in order to perform tests on boilers, turbines, generators and other power plant equipment
Learn to compile and record data relating to tests and investigations including graphs, curves, and reports
Assist with maintaining the analyzing equipment to ensure accurate information for plant operations
Develop basic knowledge of industrial processes and systems
Actively participate in continuous improvement activities
Assist in the performance of work related to the analysis, detection and repair of defects in interlock and electrical control systems, electrical and electronic devices, three phase motor controls, switchgear, motors and related controls, solid state equipment, computers, solid state communication systems, and other electrical and electronic devices such as protective relays, current transformers, potential transformers, meters, gauges, process control systems
Assist in engineering studies and calculations related to the operating efficiency of power plant equipment, and assist engineers in performing other technical services
