Chief Information Security Officer

Position Overview

The Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) is responsible for the security of company and client information and for the management of information technology risks across Northern Trust's global business. This role directs, manages, plans, and administers the operational and administrative activities associated with the Information Security section. The CISO is also responsible for security reviews of application technology architecture, providing state-of-the-art technical expertise and support to clients, IT management, and staff in risk assessment and the implementation of appropriate data security procedures. This position manages multiple projects, professional and technical staff, and other related activities. The CISO develops, implements, and communicates an overall strategy to meet the strategic plans for the corporation and business units, overseeing and directing the activities for the units to ensure resources are available to accomplish business objectives.

Major Duties

  1. Approve IS Security Architecture: Approves IS security architecture/designs, plans, controls, processes, standards, policies, and procedures to ensure alignment with IS standards and overall IS security strategy.
  2. Manage Technology Risk: Manages technology risk through the direct management of a group of managers. Oversees, plans, and directs the activities for the units, ensuring that business objectives are met.
  3. Develop Risk Assessment Techniques: Directs the development of techniques and procedures for conducting IS security risk assessments and compliance audits, the evaluation and testing of hardware, firmware, and software for possible impact on system security, and the investigation and resolution of security incidents.
  4. Advise Management & Develop Strategy: Advises management on security effectiveness and recommends enhancements. Develops, implements, and communicates an overall strategy to meet the strategic plans for both the corporation and business units. Directs the activities of the area towards accomplishing those objectives.
  5. Oversee Resources & Budgets: Oversees financial and staff resources, including developing and managing capital and expense budgets, and ensuring that resources are available to accomplish the objectives set for the area. Develops and manages programs to support risk management and compliance objectives.
  6. Accountability for Performance: Assumes full accountability for the performance/profitability of the area as compared to the plan.
  7. Accountability for Staff Development: Assumes accountability for performance management, career development, and diversity programs in assigned areas.

Requirements

  • Knowledge: Requires excellent communication skills, analytical ability, strong judgment, and management skills, and the ability to work effectively with clients, IT management and staff, vendors, and consultants.
  • Experience: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline and at least 10 or more years of technical experience in the security aspects of multiple platforms, operating systems, software, communications, and network protocols, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Salary Range

$350,000 - $475,000

  • This salary range is a good faith estimate of base pay.
