Requirements

Candidates must be US Citizens able to work domestically and obtain a low-level security clearance. A Bachelor's Degree is required, along with 2-5 years of backend engineering experience, preferably in Rails, Python, or similar. Solid experience building RESTful APIs, familiarity with AWS and PostgreSQL, understanding of federal security and compliance, and hands-on experience with Git, CI/CD, and automated testing are essential. Experience in Agile environments and strong communication skills are also necessary.

Responsibilities

The Back End Engineer will build and maintain secure backend services for VA.gov using Ruby on Rails, focusing on dynamic forms and submission workflows. Responsibilities include collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, modernizing and scaling VA.gov APIs, building performant Rails services, and supporting CI/CD and DevOps efforts to ensure a reliable and accessible experience for Veterans.
