Requirements

Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree and a J.D. (or equivalent), hold an active law license, and have a minimum of 10 years of experience in patent litigation within the pharmaceutical and/or biotech sectors, either in private practice or industry. An advanced degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience, is preferred. The role requires comfort advising on diverse technical subject matter, demonstrated leadership, strong interpersonal skills, good judgment, meticulous attention to detail, excellent communication skills, the ability to handle confidential information, and a commitment to continuous learning and adaptation. Experience managing IP litigation in the pharmaceutical industry is preferred.

Responsibilities

The Associate Vice President - Assistant General Patent Counsel will oversee U.S. and global patent enforcement, lead freedom to operate matters, and contribute to IP-related contract and other disputes. Key responsibilities include setting strategy for, managing, and advising senior leadership on pre-litigation, litigation, and high-risk IP matters. The role involves leading and managing outside counsel, coordinating internal efforts for IP litigation, advising senior management on global IP litigation, and maintaining engagement with external parties. This position requires coordinating across Lilly Legal on IP litigation issues and partnering effectively with colleagues within Lilly Legal, particularly those responsible for IP procurement, while building and maintaining relationships with key Lilly constituencies.
