Requirements

  • Entry-level position with ability to learn and develop fabrication skills under mentorship
  • General fabrication skills including: machining (milling, lathe, drilling, tapping, fly cutting, grinding, installing hardware like heli-coils and threaded inserts), soldering (using torch, hot plate, or oven with flux and solder for aluminum and copper), brazing (using torch or furnace, selecting appropriate process), understanding of welding processes and occasional welding, leak checking (using helium mass spectrometer in vacuum, sniffing, and bagged modes), minor electrical work (wiring heaters, solder fixtures, setting up variacs, watt-meters, measuring current/resistance)
  • Ability to perform all skills safely to prevent injury
  • Ability to fabricate hardware and prototypes per instructions or engineering drawings, meeting tolerances, performance requirements, and high-quality "craftsman-like" appearance
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings per GD&T standards (ANSI/ASME Y14.5M-1994), with attention to tolerances and special finishes
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 and AS9100 quality standards, including FAI certifications, preparing/filling travelers, following procedures, obtaining C of C, and filing project information
  • Commitment to on-time delivery to internal/external customers
  • Maintain clean, organized work area and laboratory, returning tools, disposing/storing materials

Responsibilities

  • Assist technicians and engineers with hands-on fabrication and testing of hardware in the laboratory
  • Learn to use laboratory equipment independently through mentorship
  • Develop and demonstrate general fabrication skills (machining, soldering, brazing, welding understanding, leak checking, electrical work)
  • Assemble hardware and prototypes per instructions/drawings
  • Interpret engineering drawings using GD&T standards
  • Follow quality standards (ISO 9001, AS9100), document work (FAI, travelers, C of C, project folders)
  • Ensure on-time delivery of work
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of work area and laboratory
  • Set up and conduct laboratory tests of units/components under operational conditions per plans, procedures, and specifications
  • Analyze test data, report results, and record measurements accurately in laboratory notebook or electronic database
