Role Transition and Impact

Deel is transitioning Payroll Operations to be powered by Deel’s own local tax engine, replacing a third-party service provider (ADP) in Canada for payroll tax operations. As part of this transition, the statutory filing and remittance process will be done in-house by the Deel payroll tax operations team.

The role's impact will enable Deel to:

  • Ensure total compliance related to tax authorities and management.
  • Avoid possibly costly percentage-based penalties. For example, a single penalty for Deel’s largest Canadian entities can cost more than $1 million per penalty in cases where payments were accidentally remitted late (over 15 days) or under-remitted.
  • Allow Deel to migrate acquired companies into Deel’s own infrastructure. For example, currently Safeguard global entities.

Responsibilities

The Tax Specialist will carry out several responsibilities for Deel’s EOR and GP business in Canada:

  • Oversee and manage the filing process for statutory remittances for every Canadian payroll entity (currently more than 250 entities and increasing).
  • Oversee and manage the remittance of statutory payments to authorities (managing over $500 million dollars of remittance payments sent to the authorities a year).
  • Oversee T4’s and RL-1’s and manage possible T4 and RL-1 amendments.
  • Act as a L2 payroll tax representative for client entities for authorities such as Canada Revenue Agency and Revenue Québec.
  • Manage and control notices received by global payroll clients and resolve them in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure and avoid payroll penalties for Deel’s global payroll clients and Deel’s local EOR entity.
  • Ensure compliance through overseeing related quality assurance processes.
  • Work directly with clients regarding helping them with authority-related questions.
  • Support with audits that Canadian tax authorities issue to Deel’s payroll clients.
