Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as a reporter at newspapers, news websites, magazines, wire services, or other news outlets
  • Excellent news judgment, superior writing and reporting skills, and a strong record of breaking news and developing sources
  • Experience covering Congress strongly preferred
  • Experience in Washington, D.C. (implied from context)
  • Ability to submit four (4) published writing samples from newspapers, news websites, or news magazines demonstrating reporting and writing ability, with a note explaining what sets the work apart and illustrates journalism approach
  • Based in Washington, DC, with daily reporting from the Capitol

Responsibilities

  • Produce a daily story of the day about congressional leaders and their strategies and messaging
  • Contribute to other teams’ stories and medium- and long-term enterprise reports
  • Contribute to CQ and Roll Call newsletters, prominent space in Roll Call print, legislative tracking (markups and vote entry), and coverage of major legislation and nominations
  • Write and analyze annual CQ Vote Studies reports
  • Work with the White House correspondent on the relationship between executive and legislative leaders
  • Collaborate on photo/visuals, graphics, podcasts, and other storytelling forms to enhance reporting
  • Write profile stories about members of the House and Senate, particularly leaders, prominent caucus and faction leaders, other lawmakers, and congressional candidates, feeding into CQ’s Guide to the New Congress and other products
  • Participate in webinars and other corporate activities to amplify journalism
