Staff Software Engineer, Frontend Web Platform

Position Overview

Zip is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our Frontend Web Platform team. You will be instrumental in designing and building scalable architecture, tooling, and processes that empower Zip's engineers to deliver enterprise-quality software with high velocity. This role offers a unique opportunity to provide technical leadership, guiding architectural decisions and accelerating development through techniques like design system optimization and AI-assisted codemods. You will directly impact your colleagues' workflows, receiving immediate feedback on features you ship. This is a high-leverage position where small improvements significantly multiply across the hundreds of engineers we support. While we foster a collaborative environment with ample guidance and mentorship, we value engineers who demonstrate autonomy in scoping and solving complex technical challenges.

Responsibilities

• Lead Initiatives: Ensure new features are performant and reliable, developing innovative frameworks to address unique testing challenges.
• Accelerate Development: Drive the adoption of AI-driven tools across the development lifecycle, including IDEs, code reviews, and test generation.
• Enhance Velocity & Productivity: Diagnose and eliminate friction points in development environments, testing patterns, CI pipelines, deployment processes, and feature flag conventions.
• Improve Code Quality: Analyze legacy patterns for sunsetting and build new frameworks and guardrails to promote best practices.
• Optimize Customer Experience: Systematically improve platform-layer frameworks to enhance the overall product experience and prevent issues.
• Design System Development: Build and enhance our current design system and component library.
• Establish Best Practices: Define and implement best practices for common UI/UX patterns such as tables, search, and filters.
• Lead Rebranding: Spearhead large-scale rebrand projects using codemods or design tokens.
• Build Accessibility Framework: Develop an accessibility framework incorporating linting and audit tools.

Requirements

• 4+ years of software engineering experience.
• Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or a related technical field (e.g., Physics, Mathematics).
• Experience with modern web development tools.
• Proficiency in our tech stack: React, Typescript, and GraphQL.
• Strong attention to detail and a deep sense of ownership.
• Proven ability to diagnose obstacles, debug friction, and drive velocity.
