About this team and role:

The Firefox team is comprised of engineers passionate about delivering the fastest, most user-friendly, and secure browser experience. We are responsible for the secure, efficient, and high-quality functioning of the browser's features. We are seeking a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer to spearhead the development and expansion of new machine learning-driven products and tools within Firefox. This role is pivotal in ensuring safe and beneficial AI and machine learning experiences for our users.

Senior Staff Engineers are recognized industry experts who influence product strategy and goals across multiple teams. They translate strategy into actionable plans for these teams, mentor junior engineers by transferring responsibilities, and collaborate with management to build team consensus and provide direction.

What you’ll do:

• Tackle complex, open-ended challenges and drive them to successful completion, collaborating with designers and engineers to enhance the web.
• Identify strategic opportunities to leverage Large Language Models (LLMs) for improving the Firefox user experience.
• Lead the design, development, and integration of cutting-edge AI and machine learning models within Firefox, working closely with product management, full-stack engineering, and design teams.
• Stay abreast of the latest advancements in AI, informing feature development and ensuring our methodologies remain innovative and relevant.
• Set an example for the team by upskilling them in AI and fostering thought leadership.

What you'll bring:

• 8+ years of experience as a Machine Learning Engineer, with a proven track record of building and deploying ML models in production for user-facing applications.
• Experience shipping LLMs and multimodal models within user-centric products.
• A deep understanding of fundamental machine learning concepts, including deep learning, natural language processing, large language models, and reinforcement learning, with demonstrated expertise in at least one of these areas.
• Ability to identify critical organizational problems and collaborate across teams to devise optimal resolution strategies.
• A consistent history of technical leadership across multiple teams, successfully shipping AI products while demonstrating strong collaboration, flexibility, and respect for diverse perspectives.
• Experience with AI ecosystem tooling, including open-source solutions and cloud services (e.g., GCP, AWS, Azure).
• Proficiency in design of experiments, survey design, and large-scale A/B testing.
• Experience with responsible AI practices, transparent algorithms, and prioritizing user needs.
• A pragmatic approach to driving projects forward within defined timeframes, including managing trade-offs and implementing safeguards for new functionalities.
• Ability to lead and thrive within a distributed team environment.
