Position Overview

The Coinbase Embedded SRE Program provides dedicated Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) support to teams, aiming to enhance the reliability, availability, efficiency, and scalability of their services. This role is crucial for ensuring Coinbase systems can handle peak traffic and maintain availability during unexpected events. As an embedded SRE, you will work directly with product engineers to uplift Coinbase services and systems, fostering a culture of reliability across the company. You will contribute to company-wide goals of scaling systems 10-50x and improving service availability, reliability, scalability, and operational excellence through various initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Improve observability, reliability, and availability by defining and measuring key metrics.
• Build automation and improve systems to eliminate toil and operational work.
• Collaborate with the core infrastructure team to performance tune and optimize cloud deployments (e.g., Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes, EC2).
• Partner with Coinbase product teams to reduce service disruptions and automate incident response.
• Proactively identify and analyze reliability problems across business units and the technology stack, then design and implement software for significant improvements.
• Educate, mentor, and hold engineering teams accountable for improving system reliability and making reliability a core value of the Coinbase engineering culture.
• Write high-quality, well-tested code to meet customer needs.
• Debug complex technical problems, making systems and products function better and easier to deploy, own, operate, and diagnose.
• Review all feature designs within your product area and across the company for cross-cutting projects.
• Own the security, safety, scale, operational integrity, and architectural clarity of these designs.
• Build pipelines to integrate with third-party vendors.

Requirements

• At least 2+ years of experience in software engineering.
• Proven experience in designing, building, scaling, and maintaining production services, with knowledge of service-oriented architecture composition.
• Ability to write high-quality, well-tested code to meet customer needs.
• Passion for building an open financial system that brings the world together.
• Strong technical skills in system design and coding.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a bias towards open, transparent cultural practices.
• Strong skills in observability, debugging, and performance tuning.
• Ability to clearly and simply explain technical concepts.
• Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with engineers from junior to principal levels.
• Demonstrated critical thinking under pressure.
• Willingness to dive into understanding, debugging, and improving any layer of the stack.

Nice to Haves

• Experience building reliable systems capable of handling high throughput and low latency.
• Experience with observability and monitoring systems such as Kibana, Datadog, etc.
• Familiarity with working in rapid growth environments.
• Experience in Ruby, Go, and Terraform.
• Experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or other cloud environments.
• Experience designing and building reliable systems.
• Experience working in a highly regulated environment.
• Experience writing company-facing blog posts and training materials.
