Position Overview

Thumbtack is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Developer Experience (DX) team. This team is dedicated to making engineering at Thumbtack fast, reliable, and delightful. You will collaborate with engineers across the company to identify pain points, design solutions, and drive improvements that enhance the entire engineering organization.

About the Developer Experience Team

The DX team tackles complex software development challenges, including introducing GenAI tooling, balancing innovation with reliability, streamlining the designer-developer feedback loop, and building foundations for measuring developer productivity.

Responsibilities

• Own the realization of the company’s charter across key infrastructure components, including build systems, CI/CD, test infrastructure, observability, and dev/test environments.
• Optimize performance, improve usability, and simplify configuration of developer workflows from the development pipeline to production.
• Collaborate closely with engineers across iOS, Android, web, and backend to identify system and tool gaps and deliver solutions.
• Explore and evaluate best-in-class and cutting-edge technologies, driving the adoption of impactful technologies at Thumbtack.
• Drive engineering projects to completion with a focus on developer impact and a sense of urgency.
• Solve complex technical problems at any level of the stack, including front-end, back-end, and infrastructure.

Requirements

• Minimum of 4+ years of industry experience in software engineering.
• Fluency in at least one major programming language, with the ability to switch between multiple languages and frameworks. Thumbtack's stack includes Go, Scala, PHP, TypeScript, React, Next.js, Swift, and Kotlin. Developer tooling is primarily in Go and Python.
• Proven ability to write high-quality, maintainable, testable, reliable, and performant code.
• Experience working on a developer infrastructure team, in developer experience roles, or contributing to related open-source projects.
• Ability to rigorously break down complex problems and understand necessary tradeoffs for delivering impactful products.
• Deep care for developer infrastructure and a history of making improvements to the surrounding developer ecosystem.
• Curious, data-driven, critical thinker who enjoys asking questions and delivering value to users and teammates.
